Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch Leads Republican Mark Sanford In South Carolina Special Election Race: Poll

Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch is leading Republican Mark Sanford by nearly double digits, according to a new poll, just two weeks before the pair will face off in a closely watched South Carolina special election. University administrator Colbert Busch has opened up a nine-point lead on Sanford, leading the former governor 50% to 41%, Public Policy Polling (PPP) reported Tuesday. Green Party candidate Eugene Platt got 3% of the vote, according to the poll. “Elizabeth Colbert Busch is now looking like a clear favorite in the special election,” PPP President Dean Debnam said in a release. “The only question is whether an extremely unpopular Sanford can find some way to make voters like her even less than him in the next two weeks.” nydailynews Read more

Anthony Weiner returns to Twitter

Anthony Weiner, the disgraced ex-US congressman forced to resign after tweeting lewd photos of himself to women, on Monday reopened a Twitter account in an apparent political comeback drive. Weiner, 48, who said earlier this month he was weighing a comeback with a run for mayor of New York City, opened the account @anthonyweiner — which listed no “live” tweets, but retweeted some policy papers. Weiner dipped his toe back into the Twitterverse by retweeting a document “64 ideas to keep new york the capital of the middle class,” and another on Earth Day, but quickly lured more than 5,000 followers. Weiner was once seen as a frontrunner to replace billionaire Michael Bloomberg in November elections to the Big Apple’s City Hall. But the Democrat’s hard-charging political career in the US House of Representatives imploded in 2011 with the X-rated Twitter scandal. Now he has told The New York Times he could get back into politics and commissioned a poll to know if New Yorkers would give him another chance. “I don’t have this burning, overriding desire to go out and run for office,” he said. “But I do recognize, to some degree, it’s now or maybe never for me, [...]

Sen. Baucus Retiring In 2014

Senior aides to Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT) told The Washington Post on Tuesday that the long-serving Democrat has decided to retire from Congress rather than seek re-election. The Senate Finance Committee chairman has served in Congress since 1978, and played a key role in killing President Barack Obama’s proposal for a “public option” in the Affordable Care Act. While it’s not clear who might have lined up to run against Baucus, recent survey data from the Democratic-affiliated Public Policy Polling group found that his constituents had a mostly negative view of the senator. rawstory read more

ENDA to be introduced Thursday

The Employment Non-Discrimination Act will be introduced in both chambers of Congress Both the House and the Senate will introduce ENDA, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, a key piece of gay rights legislation that prevents discrimination against gays, lesbians and transgender people in the workplace. The Washington Blade reports: The bill will be reintroduced in the House by Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.), the most senior openly gay member of the chamber, who’s taking over the legislation now that former Rep. Barney Frank has retired. In the Senate, the legislation will be reintroduced by Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.). The lawmakers’ offices confirmed they would introduce ENDA concurrently on Thursday. Though the White House has said it plans to make ENDA’s passage a priority, though it has not made much headway, and the legislation has had a hard time getting any traction in Congress. Supporters of the legislation hope that with the recent slew of Senators who have come out in support of gay marriage, ENDA will have more of a fighting chance. Source: Salon Read more

Hackers have compromised the main Twitter account of The Associated Press, sending out an erroneous tweet about an attack at the White House. The tweet, which said that there had been two explosions at the White House and President Barack Obama was injured, came after hackers made repeated attempts to steal the passwords of AP journalists. The AP said Tuesday that its Twitter account had been suspended following a hack and said it was working to correct the issue.
