Is the Sun Setting On the U.S. Middle-Class?

Is the Sun Setting On the U.S. Middle-Class?

You have to hand it to Americans; despite inexorable proof to the contrary, a surprisingly large number of them refuse to admit that the sun is setting on the middle class. Now, that’s not just HGtransecon’s observation. It’s also the implied, if not stated conclusion of a very recent Heartland Monitor poll, which is conducted quarterly and is sponsored by the insurer Allstate and the National Journal. And what they found is some pretty alarming stuff. Essentially what the researchers found was that the U.S. middle class, which for the longest time was the world’s personification of optimism and upward mobility, is a very different story here in the second decade of the twenty-first century. Middle-Class Americans No Longer Dream of Getting Ahead The dream of getting ahead is almost as prevalent as the hope that disco returns. No, getting ahead has become one of those things for the wealthy. For those out there like HGtransecon’s writers, it is the fear of falling behind that occupies our time and energy. The poll above found a similar prevailing attitude among Americans in the ever-shrinking middle-class as did we. The poll found that 59 percent of those responding – a group of [...]

Obama Phones Jason Collins, Offers Support After Athlete admits He’s Gay

President Obama telephoned professional basketball player Jason Collins on Monday to congratulate him for coming out as the first openly gay player on a major U.S. sports team. According to a White House aide, the president called Collins Monday evening to express his support and said he was impressed by his courage. Collins, 34, is a veteran NBA center who played for the Boston Celtics and Washington Wizards during the 2012-13 season. He is currently a free agent. In a piece for this week’s Sports Illustrated, he admitted to being gay. He cited Rep. Joseph Kennedy (D-Mass.) as inspiring his decision to go public. “I’m a 34-year-old NBA center. I’m black. And I’m gay,” he said in the self-written article. Earlier on Monday, White House press secretary Jay Carney expressed praise from the White House for Collins. The Hill Read more

Florida Gov. Rick Scott signs law restricting drones

A new Florida law restricts police use of drones within the state’s borders. Florida Gov. Rick Scott signed the measure Thursday, saying it will protect the state’s residents from “unwarranted surveillance.” Before local or state law enforcement agencies can use surveillance drones, the Freedom from Unwarranted Surveillance Act requires a judge to approve in nearly all cases. The legislation makes exceptions in cases involving “imminent danger to life or serious damage to property” and when “credible intelligence” from the federal Department of Homeland Security points to “a high risk of a terrorist attack.” Source: CNN Read more

World’s most exclusive club ‘more like a support group,’ Obama says, as four former presidents converge for Bush library dedication

President Barack Obama on Thursday praised his predecessor at the dedication of his library for showing strength and resolve in the days after the Sept. 11 attacks and said if Congress passes immigration reform “it will be in large part thanks to the hard work of President George W. Bush.” Obama spoke along with all four living former presidents in a rare reunion honouring one of their own at the opening of the George W. Bush Presidential Center. “To know President George W. Bush is to like him,” Obama said. The presidents — Bush, Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush and Jimmy Carter — were cheered by a crowd of former White House officials and world leaders as they took the stage together to open the dedication.

Internet sales tax embraced by no-tax Republicans

You don’t see this very often: a majority of Senate Republicans voting to make people who buy stuff on the Internet pay state and local sales taxes. Anti-tax guru Grover Norquist isn’t happy about it, and the conservative Heritage Foundation is questioning the senators’ conservative credentials. But the issue of taxing Internet sales is getting strong support from Republicans and Democrats alike. The Senate could vote as early as Thursday on a bill to empower states to require online retailers to collect state and local sales taxes for purchases made over the Internet. Under the bill, the sales taxes would be sent to the states where a shopper lives. On Wednesday, the bill passed a test vote in the Senate, 74 to 23, with 27 Republicans voting in favor. Senators were trying to work out agreements Thursday on potential amendments and the timing of a final vote. FULL story at link. Source: AP-Excite Read more

Clinton Teases Bush About Paintings – VIDEO

As current and former heads of state gather in Dallas, Thursday, to honor George W. Bush, it would be wrong to ignore the cracks in the former president’s legacy. Leave it to Bill Clinton to address the elephant in the room: George W.’s paintings. “Your mother showed me some of your landscapes and animal paintings and I thought they were great. I seriously considered calling you to paint my own portrait, until I saw the emails that were stolen from your sister’s account,” Clinton said. “Those bathroom sketches were wonderful. Great News! Poll: Sen. Ayotte loses support after voting against background checks

Sen. Kelly Ayotte (D-N.H.) has lost support due to her vote last week against a gun control bill, according to a new poll. The dip could put her at the top of target lists for pro-gun-control groups looking to sway votes on a future measure. According to the survey, from Democratic firm Public Policy Polling, 50 percent of respondents said her vote against the measure to expand background checks, which failed in the Senate last week, would make them less likely to support her for reelection. Her approval rating has taken a sharp hit from centrists since the last PPP poll of New Hampshire, in October. Then, centrists were split on the senator, with 41 percent approving and 40 percent disapproving of her job performance. Now, she’s deep underwater with centrists, with only 30 percent approving and 61 percent disapproving. Overall, respondents were largely split on Ayotte, with 44 percent approving of her job performance and 46 percent disapproving. Current Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan also leads Ayotte in a hypothetical 2016 match-up, taking 46 percent support to Ayotte’s 44 percent support. Read more

Gabrielle Giffords’s Super PAC Slams Mitch McConnell Over Gun Background Check Vote

A super PAC founded by former Democratic Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is calling out Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell for voting against gun control measures in a new radio advertisement. Americans Responsible for Solutions was formed by Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly, and is launching the spots in the Louisville and Lexington areas. Giffords, who was shot in the head during a 2011 shooting rampage in Tucson, Ariz., has been an outspoken proponent for gun control measures since retiring from Congress. The ad implores McConnell to listen to voters, and highlights 82 percent of Kentuckians favor background checks for gun purchases. “McConnell opposed common sense checks to keep guns out of the hands of criminals,” the narrator says. “Written by a Republican and a Democrat. Supported by law enforcement officers. It was a common sense plan that protected Second Amendment Rights. But Senator McConnell ignored the will of the people.” Listen: The Senate rejected a bipartisan compromise on background checks last week, which McConnell voted against and led a GOP backed filibuster to defeat. In the aftermath of the victory, the McConnell campaign was celebratory in fundraising messages and social networking, but in a response to the Giffords ad it [...]

Anthony Weiner returns to Twitter

Anthony Weiner, the disgraced ex-US congressman forced to resign after tweeting lewd photos of himself to women, on Monday reopened a Twitter account in an apparent political comeback drive. Weiner, 48, who said earlier this month he was weighing a comeback with a run for mayor of New York City, opened the account @anthonyweiner — which listed no “live” tweets, but retweeted some policy papers. Weiner dipped his toe back into the Twitterverse by retweeting a document “64 ideas to keep new york the capital of the middle class,” and another on Earth Day, but quickly lured more than 5,000 followers. Weiner was once seen as a frontrunner to replace billionaire Michael Bloomberg in November elections to the Big Apple’s City Hall. But the Democrat’s hard-charging political career in the US House of Representatives imploded in 2011 with the X-rated Twitter scandal. Now he has told The New York Times he could get back into politics and commissioned a poll to know if New Yorkers would give him another chance. “I don’t have this burning, overriding desire to go out and run for office,” he said. “But I do recognize, to some degree, it’s now or maybe never for me, [...]

Sen. Baucus Retiring In 2014

Senior aides to Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT) told The Washington Post on Tuesday that the long-serving Democrat has decided to retire from Congress rather than seek re-election. The Senate Finance Committee chairman has served in Congress since 1978, and played a key role in killing President Barack Obama’s proposal for a “public option” in the Affordable Care Act. While it’s not clear who might have lined up to run against Baucus, recent survey data from the Democratic-affiliated Public Policy Polling group found that his constituents had a mostly negative view of the senator. rawstory read more

ENDA to be introduced Thursday

The Employment Non-Discrimination Act will be introduced in both chambers of Congress Both the House and the Senate will introduce ENDA, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, a key piece of gay rights legislation that prevents discrimination against gays, lesbians and transgender people in the workplace. The Washington Blade reports: The bill will be reintroduced in the House by Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.), the most senior openly gay member of the chamber, who’s taking over the legislation now that former Rep. Barney Frank has retired. In the Senate, the legislation will be reintroduced by Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.). The lawmakers’ offices confirmed they would introduce ENDA concurrently on Thursday. Though the White House has said it plans to make ENDA’s passage a priority, though it has not made much headway, and the legislation has had a hard time getting any traction in Congress. Supporters of the legislation hope that with the recent slew of Senators who have come out in support of gay marriage, ENDA will have more of a fighting chance. Source: Salon Read more

The GOP is Going to Use the Boston Terror Attacks to Derail Immigration Reform

Patrick Leahy To Chuck Grassley: Don’t ‘Exploit’ Boston Bombing Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) chastised some of his Republican colleagues on Monday for saying immigration reform should be delayed in light of the bombing last week in Boston, accusing them of taking advantage of the tragedy to push their own political agenda. “Late last week opponents of comprehensive immigration reform began to exploit the Boston Marathon bombing,” Leahy said at the second Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on an immigration bill released last week by the “gang of eight.” “I urge restraint in that regard. … Let no one be so cruel as to try to use the heinous acts of two young men last week to derail the dreams and futures of millions of hardworking people.” Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the ranking member of the committee, said at an immigration hearing last week that reform should be partially reconsidered because the suspected perpetrators of the bombing were immigrants, one a legal permanent resident and the other a recently-naturalized citizen. “Given the events of this week, it’s important for us to understand the gaps and loopholes in our immigration system,” he said. “While we don’t yet know the immigration [...]

Surviving Boston Bombing Suspect Charged Today – GOP Unhappy as Usual

A federal magistrate has filed charges at the hospital holding Dzhokhar Tsarnaev with ‘Using a Weapon of Mass Destruction’ Tsarnaev could face the death penalty if convicted. Court papers reveal chilling message from bombing suspect to carjack victim: “Did you hear about the Boston explosion?” and “I did that,” According to the White House, the Defendant will NOT be tried as an enemy combatant, but will be tried in Federal Court. Senator Lindsey Graham appeared on CNN shortly afterwards, and was not happy about how the White House has handled this. He would prefer Dzhokhar Tsarnaev be declared an ‘enemy combatant’ so he could be tried in a military tribunal, which does not come with the same rights, and was setup for Non-US citizens. Well Senator and sometimes lesbian Lindsey Graham didn’t get the memo that the suspect is an American Citizen. He also doesn’t understand that the USA has 100% conviction rate in terror cases. Panic Must Be Rampant Among Gold Worshiping Paulites

I’m 100% positive that the ongoing precipitous fall in gold’s lustrous shine will not sway the belief of loyal, but simple-minded Paulites that the Gold Standard is still preferable to the current monetary mechanism of fiat currency. Neither will the believers that the moon landing was a hoax ever believe that Neil Young and Buzz Aldrin actually planted a U.S. flag on the moon. But for the rest of the population in the land of the logical and reasonable, let’s clear up some common misconceptions. Congressman Ron Paul—legendary herald of the omnipotent “gold god”, along with his loyal acolytes– Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke’s biggest critic, fervently believe that a return to the gold standard implies an end to monetary policy and the Federal Reserve. Bzzzzzzz. Wrong again. Under a Gold Standard, the U.S. Treasury would exchange dollars for bullion at a price of, say, $1,000 per ounce. In practice, that means banks would freely exchange their dollar accounts at the Fed for electronic claims to the magic money rock. Nevertheless, the Fed would still buy government debt or other securities in exchange for newly created reserves, lend its reserves to banks, and set interest rates on its loans to [...]

Giffords Sums Up Her Disgust With Congress in a Scathing Op-Ed: “Shame on Them.”

Wednesday evening, shortly after Senate Republicans used a filibuster to derail an already watered-down compromise on extending background checks, President Obama used a Rose Garden address to blast the lawmakers behind the effort, saying they “caved to the pressure” from the gun lobby, which itself “willfully lied” about the legislation. Surrounded by Newtown families and Gabby Giffords, it was as visibly angry as many have seen the president. This morning, Giffords, who still struggles speaking aloud since being shot in the head in early 2011, had her say in an emotional op-ed in the New York Times. She didn’t pull any punches either. Here’s a snippet: Senators say they fear the N.R.A. and the gun lobby. But I think that fear must be nothing compared to the fear the first graders in Sandy Hook Elementary School felt as their lives ended in a hail of bullets. The fear that those children who survived the massacre must feel every time they remember their teachers stacking them into closets and bathrooms, whispering that they loved them, so that love would be the last thing the students heard if the gunman found them. … Some of the senators who voted against the background-check [...]

Obama says NRA ‘lied’ as Senate fails on gun safety – VIDEO

This was a pretty shameful day for Washington,” said an angry President Obama after the Senate voted 54-46 against a bipartisan compromise to expand background checks for gun purchases. It needed 60 votes to pass. He spoke in the Rose Garden with families of murdered Newtown children and injured former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords at his side. Opponents of the bill “caved to pressure,” he said. With no rational arguments against the bill, their vote “came down to politics—the worry that a vocal minority of gun owners would come after them in future elections.” msnbc read more

Scarborough Goes Off On GOP For Voting Against Background Checks: ‘This Party Is Moving Toward Extinction’

As was expected by anyone who’s seen more than five minutes of Morning Joe in the past couple months, Joe Scarborough was upset this morning after the Senate failed to pass a measure that would expand background checks for gun purchases. Calling out those who voted against it, Scarborough emphatically stated that this Republican Party is headed toward “extinction” — and a new one will take its place. Most of the times, “when you lose, you lose,” Scarborough said. But this time is different. “This is just the beginning” — and the fight won’t end until we have a better background check system. Mike Barnicle agreed with Scarborough, noting that President Obama wasn’t the one who lost yesterday. “The president did not suffer a defeat,” he asserted. “The American people suffered the defeat yesterday in the United States Senate.” As Barnicle went on to illustrated how the Senate is a “broken” institution, the discussion turned toward filibuster reform, and how the talk about it didn’t result in any action. If Democrats had pushed to change the rules, Scarborough posited, this bill would have passed. “You do not ignore 90 percent of the American people on an issue of public safety,” [...]

Jon Stewart Tears Apart CNN For ‘Completely Fucking Wrong’ Boston Reporting: ‘Human Centipede Of News’

Jon Stewart let CNN have it over its erroneous reporting that an arrest had been made in the case of the Boston Marathon bombing. Stewart mocked how much CNN kept boasting of its “exclusive reporting,” which turned ot to be exclusive “because it was completely fucking wrong,” and was even more blown away by how CNN was subsequently backing away from and questioning that very report. Stewart described this as the network “shit[ting] in their own mouths,” christening CNN “the Human Centipede of News.” RELATED: Jeff Zucker Attributes CNN Criticism To Jealousy: ‘Just Because Jon Stewart Makes Fun Of It Doesn’t Mean He’s Right’ Stewart played a variety of clips in which Wolf Blitzer touted the network’s “exclusive reporting” on the arrest. Colbert Rips Cable News For ‘Breakthrough’ In Reporting Everything ‘We Don’t Know’ About Boston Bombing

When it came to informing the public about developments in the Boston Marathon bombing investigation, yesterday wasn’t a great day for cable news (save for MSNBC, which had a more cautious Pete Williams reporting on the story). CNN in particular has seen the brunt of the criticism (that Obamacare verdict didn’t help), with Jon Stewart deeming the network the “human centipede of news.” His Comedy Central colleague Stephen Colbert, too, chimed in last night. Colbert began with a different story, discussing the ricin letters sent to Sen. Roger Wicker and President Obama. Starting with being unaware of Sen. Wicker’s existence, Colbert detailed the many things yet unknown about the case. “Roger Wicker does not sound plausible as a senator,” Colbert quipped, noting it “sounds more like a patio furniture store.” Similarly, in Boston, 48 hours after the marathon bombings, “there has been a major breakthrough in the reporting of all the other things we don’t know.” With that, he cued up a montage of cable news clips offering contradictions amid their reporting and many instances of the phrase, “We don’t know…” “So, no arrest,” Colbert remarked, “but at least we have not wasted any precious time not being suspicious of [...]

Obama Proposal To Sell TVA Blasted By Republicans

In a political role reversal, Republicans are blasting President Barack Obama’s plan to consider selling the Tennessee Valley Authority, an icon of the New Deal long targeted by conservatives as an example of government overreach. Obama’s 2014 budget proposal calls for a strategic review of the TVA, the nation’s largest public utility with 9 million customers in seven states from Virginia to Mississippi. Obama Boston Bombings Statement 4-15-2013

Published on Apr 15, 2013 6:10PM ET – Obama issued a statement regarding the Boston Bombings. Transcript below: “Good afternoon, everybody. Earlier today I was briefed by my homeland security team on the events in Boston. We’re continuing to monitor and respond to the situation as it unfolds, and I’ve directed the full resources of the federal government to help state and local authorities protect our people, increase security around the United States, as necessary, and investigate what happened. The American people will say a prayer for Boston tonight, and Michelle and I send our deepest thoughts and prayers to the families of the victims in the wake of this senseless loss. We don’t yet have all the answers, but we do know that multiple people have been wounded, some gravely, in explosions at the Boston Marathon. I’ve spoken to FBI Director Mueller and Secretary of Homeland Secretary Napolitano, and they’re mobilizing the appropriate resources to investigate and to respond. I’ve updated leaders of Congress in both parties, and we reaffirm that on days like this there are no Republicans or Democrats; we are Americans united in concern for our fellow citizens. I’ve also spoken with Governor Patrick and Mayor [...]

New York Registration Of Reclassified Assault Weapons, Magazine Ammunition Limit Begin

New York Registration Of Reclassified Assault Weapons, Magazine Ammunition Limit Begin

Key measures of New York’s tough new gun law kicked in Monday, with owners of firearms now reclassified as assault weapons required to start registering the firearms and new limits on the number of bullets allowed in magazines. As the new provisions took effect, New York’s affiliate of the National Rifle Association planned to file a court request for a federal injunction to immediate halt to the magazine limit. Gov. Andrew Cuomo calls those and other provisions in the state’s new gun law common sense while dismissing criticisms he says come from “extreme fringe conservatives” who claim the government has no right to regulate guns. “Yes, they are against it, but they are the extremists and the extremists shouldn’t win, especially on this issue when it is so important to the majority,” Cuomo said in a radio interview last week. “In politics, we have to be willing to take on the extremists, otherwise you will see paralysis.” Source: Associated Press Read more

GOP Fights to Rebrand the Party of No

After several days of debating how to restore their party’s brand, Republican leaders left a party confab in Los Angeles last week in agreement that they can no longer be “the party of no.” But they were less clear on what to say “yes” to. “To win, we need to be the party of solutions,” says Nebraska GOP chairman JL Spray. Now that Republicans have pointed out problems on issues like immigration, student loans, and the budget, he adds: “Let’s start fixing some things.” …snip… The gathering’s purpose, said RNC officials who recently released a much-publicized autopsy of the 2012 election, was largely to begin reshaping negative perceptions of the GOP. At the meeting, the Republican National Committee’s 168 members sat through upbeat sessions with titles like “How to say what we mean and show that we care,” and “Winning the Women’s vote.” Those sessions were all the more important, Republicans say, because party officials keep making the wrong kinds of headlines. In the past month, Republican officials repudiated Alask Rep. Don Young for using the slur “wetback,” and Michigan national committeeman Dave Agema for posting on Facebook a story that decries “filthy” homosexuals. Source: Time Read more

Kerry Says Foreign Students ‘Scared’ Of U.S. Gun Violence: ‘They Think They’re Not Safe,’ So They Don’t Come

Among the reasons some foreign students are choosing not to study in the United States, Secretary of State John Kerry said, is because they are “scared” of the country’s gun violence. Speaking about the discussions he’s had on the topic, Kerry told CNN that they don’t feel safe. CNN foreign affairs correspondent Jill Dougherty sat down with Kerry in Tokyo and asked him whether he’s heard any “concern” about the gun control debate in the U.S. Among the response he’s received, Kerry said, some emphasis has been on how safe Japan is with their tough restrictions on guns. “We had an interesting discussion about why fewer students are coming to, particularly from Japan, to study in the United States, and one of the responses I got from our officials from conversations with parents here is that they’re actually scared,” he informed. “They think they’re not safe in the United States and so they don’t come.” They’re used to a country “where people are not running around with guns.” Unlike the United States, the right to private gun ownership in Japan is not guaranteed in law. Individuals wishing to possess any firearm must obtain a license and demonstrate a reason for [...]

Rep. Michele Bachmann Completely Baffles John Brennan With Bizarre Questions During CIA Hearing

Representatives from the CIA, including newly-installed Director John Brennan, didn’t quite know what to make of Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) this week when they sat down to answer questions from the House Intelligence Committee. Each topic she raised seemed to draw blank stares and more questions from the intelligence officials, who could not believe the congresswoman was broaching various classified subject in the open forum.First off, Bachmann brought up one of her favorite topics, the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi in September 2012. She wanted to know about the White House’s “armed drone strikes” in eastern Libya prior to those attacks last year. “Armed drone strikes in Libya?” Brennan asked in seeming disbelief. “I am unknowing of such and would defer to the White House to address your question.” When she pushed him on the issue, Brennan asserted that “the White House doesn’t have a drone capability, responsibility” and said “I don’t know what it is specifically you’re referring to.”When she failed to get the answers she was looking for, Bachmann said, “well if we aren’t going to talk about that, we aren’t going to talk about that, but that’s a question I’d like to know.” She moved [...]

Ignoring Kermit Gosnell Infanticide Factory, MSNBC Investigates If GOP Voters Too Culturally Pro-Life

As examples of self-parody go, you can’t do much better than this. As the story of Philadelphia “house of horrors” abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell explodes on the internet and makes its way gradually onto the radars of the nation’s newsroom editors, questions have arisen about why this sensational story never received the wall-to-wall treatment it appears to merit. From conservatives and liberals alike, the universal horror that the Gosnell story has inspired is palpable. But some have suggested that the story is politically inconvenient for absolutist pro-choice activists. It simply does not fit the narrative, some say, which the media has come accustomed to reporting. A rather textbook example of this narrative stewarding came today via MSNBC. The network has not yet reported on Gosnell’s infanticide factory, but they took some time out of their busy programming day today to ask a panel of political professionals if the Republican Party’s base voters are simply too culturally conservative – and too pro-life – for the party’s leadership and the general electorate. MSNBC’s host of The Daily Rundown and NBC News Chief White House Correspondent, Chuck Todd, played a clip for a Republican and Democratic political strategist on Friday of Republican National [...]

Colbert warns: Americans are going to start gay-marrying their weed

Thursday night on “The Colbert Report,” host Stephen Colbert lamented the decline in our national moral character, as evinced by the fact that a majority of Americans now support same sex marriage and marijuana legalization, which can only end one way. People are going to start marrying their weed. A majority of Americans, Colbert said, now support some form of amnesty for undocumented immigrants “and marriage for The Gays.” “And now we’ve lost another moral battle,” he said. Recently, for the first time, a majority of Americans polled said that they believe that marijuana should be legal. “It’s bad enough that there’s medical marijuana in 18 states and recreational pot is now legal in Colorado and Washington and those two states are trying to turn Idaho into a bong,” he continued. Even worse, he said, people are comparing this “pot-astrophe” to “another attack on our moral values”: same sex marriage. “You hear that?” he asked. “It’s the same thing. ‘Oh! I can’t help who I am! I was born being attracted to watching 7 hours of “Planet Earth” while eating a sack of croutons!’” “Next thing you know, stoners are going to demand their civil right to marry their Mary [...]

Biden: The NRA Is Excelling At ‘Disinformation’ – VIDEO

During a roundtable discussion on gun violence that aired Thursday on MSNBC’S “Morning Joe,” Vice President Joe Biden said the National Rifle Association is most effective at disseminating “disinformation,” pointing to the oft-invoked fear that universal background checks will lead to a national gun registry. “The one thing the NRA has done so well lately is the disinformation,” Biden said. “We use the word ‘registration.’ There is no registration in America.” When host Joe Scarborough challenged the notion that the NRA has succeeded in its efforts to push disinformation — citing public polling that shows overwhelming support for universal background checks, despite the pro-gun lobby’s opposition to the proposal — Biden said the people are out in front of lawmakers on the issue. “This is one of the cases where the public is so far ahead of the elected officials. I mean, so far ahead,” Biden said. “You saw it in immigration. You saw it in marriage issues. You’re seeing it now. The public has moved to a different place. And there is not one single thing we are suggesting — not one, the administration, in our proposal — not one single thing that anyone can make even a prima [...]

Obama’s Drone War Kills ‘Others’, Not Just Al Qaida Leaders

Obama’s Drone War Kills ‘Others’, Not Just Al Qaida Leaders

Contrary to assurances it has deployed U.S. drones only against known senior leaders of al Qaida and allied groups, the Obama administration has targeted and killed hundreds of suspected lower-level Afghan, Pakistani and unidentified “other” militants in scores of strikes in Pakistan’s rugged tribal area, classified U.S. intelligence reports show. The administration has said that strikes by the CIA’s missile-firing Predator and Reaper drones are authorized only against “specific senior operational leaders of al Qaida and associated forces” involved in the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks who are plotting “imminent” violent attacks on Americans. “It has to be a threat that is serious and not speculative,” President Barack Obama said in a Sept. 6, 2012, interview with CNN. “It has to be a situation in which we can’t capture the individual before they move forward on some sort of operational plot against the United States.” Copies of the top-secret U.S. intelligence reports reviewed by McClatchy, however, show that drone strikes in Pakistan over a four-year period didn’t adhere to those standards. The intelligence reports list killings of alleged Afghan insurgents whose organization wasn’t on the U.S. list of terrorist groups at the time of the 9/11 strikes; of suspected members [...]

Mother Jones: Tape wasn’t ‘Watergate-style’

Mother Jones: Tape wasn’t ‘Watergate-style’

Mother Jones, increasingly a destination for clandy recordings of Republicans, today published an audio recording of a Feb. 2 strategy session among aides of Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) as they geared up for McConnell’s 2014 reelection campaign. The tape showcases an extensive and aggressive set of talking points against possible opponent Ashley Judd — including attacks on the actress’s mental and emotional history. Publication of the tape set off all kinds of chatter about the FBI: “McConnell campaign calls in FBI over secret recordings,” reported CNN. Jesse Benton, a spokesman for the McConnell campaign, issued this classic statement: “We’ve always said the Left will stop at nothing to attack Sen. McConnell, but Watergate-style tactics to bug campaign headquarters is above and beyond.” Mother Jones just issued this statement, taking issue with Benton: We are still waiting for Sen. Mitch McConnell to comment on the substance of the story. Before posting this article, we contacted his Senate office and his campaign office—in particular, his campaign manager, Jesse Benton—and no one responded. As the story makes clear, we were recently provided the tape by a source who wished to remain anonymous. We were not involved in the making of the tape, but [...]

Colbert Joins Twitter for Bill Clinton

Bill Clinton has resisted Twitter so far—but Stephen Colbert took matters into his own hands on Monday night, signing the former president up for the social network under the handle “@PrezBillyJeff.” Colbert joined the former president at the Clinton Global Initiative University summit, devoting almost the entire Colbert Report to an interview with Clinton. Clinton said he doesn’t tweet because he’s a little insecure (really?) and worried about being a “friendless Tweeter.” Colbert set up the account for Clinton, but since @PresidentClinton and @WilliamJeffersonClinton were already taken, he used the handle @PrezBillyJeff. Clinton dictated his first tweet to Colbert: “Just spent amazing time with Colbert! Is he sane?” with Colbert adding #cgiu. Within hours, the account had 27,000 followers and three more tweets, all ending with: “#notColbertpretendingtobeme.” NY

Sen. Mitch McConnell Responds To Leaked Ashley Judd Audio

Sen. Mitch McConnell was prepared to go after Ashley Judd as “emotionally unbalanced,” according to secret audio tapes of the Republican’s strategy session, but the release of those tapes have prompted an FBI investigation into who may have bugged the senator’s office, his campaign said today. “We’ve always said the Left would stop at nothing to attack Sen. McConnell, but Watergate-style tactics to bug campaign headquarters are above and beyond,” McConnell campaign manager Jesse Benton told ABC News. “Senator McConnell’s campaign is working with the FBI and has notified the local U.S. Attorney in Louisville, per FBI request, about these recordings,” Benton said. “Obviously a recording device of some kind was placed in Senator McConnell’s campaign office without consent. By whom and how that was accomplished will presumably be the subject of a criminal investigation.” McConnell’s office said the FBI is investigating how the senator’s campaign office was bugged and who gave the tapes to Mother Jones magazine. Spokesman Paul Bresson of the FBI told ABC News, “We can confirm that Sen. McConnell’s office reported it and we are looking into the matter.” In the meantime, the McConnell campaign is trying to fundraise off the topic as well as blame [...]

McConnell Aides Claim Headquarters Bugged

The FBI has been asked to look into whether Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell’s campaign headquarters was bugged after a recording of a private campaign meeting surfaced in a liberal-leaning magazine. McConnell campaign manager Jesse Benton said his staff is working with the FBI because of what he called “Watergate-style tactics” to bug the office. Mother Jones magazine published the recording of the February meeting in which McConnell aides were discussing research into potential Democratic challengers, including actress Ashley Judd, who later decided not to run. Aides talked on the recording about Judd’s political positions, religious beliefs and mental health. Benton said a recording device had been placed in McConnell’s office without consent. Neither the FBI in Louisville nor the magazine immediately returned telephone calls seeking comment. wuky

Conservatives outraged over CNN photo of Thatcher with ‘pedophile’ Jimmy Savile

Conservative supporters Margaret Thatcher expressed outraged on Monday after CNN marked the death of the the former British prime minister by airing a photo of her with former BBC television presenter Jimmy Savile, a suspected pedophile. In a CNN Starting Point segment soon after the news of Thatcher’s death broke on Monday, the morning show displayed the black and white photo of Thatcher and Savile appearing together at an event in the 1980s to support the NSPCC children’s charity. CNN showed the photo at least four times during the five-minute segment. Scotland Yard announced that in 2012 that it had launched an investigation about a year after Savile’s death in October 2011 into allegations that he had sexually abused hundreds of children. Wall Street Journal Social Media Editor Neal Mann noted on Twitter that CNN “obviously didn’t get the memo” when it ran the photo of Thatcher with Savile. “That is the picture CNN chose to run for Margaret Thatcher’s obituary? A pedophile?” Michelle Malkin’s Twitchy website asked, accompanied by a list of tweets by conservatives slamming CNN’s decision. “Whoever’s doing the Thatcher montage on CNN is either an idiot or a sly lefty. Repeated images of Thatcher with Pinochet [...]

Update: Clinton hostage-taker arrested without incident

Leeland Eisenberg, who in 2007 engaged police in a 5-hour standoff as he held hostages in a Hillary Clinton campaign office, went missing from a halfway house on Sunday, a reporter for New Hampshire’s WMUR-TV tweeted. The conditions of Eisenberg’s escape were not clear, but he was due to be released in August following two probation violations. He was arrested in 2010 after failing to charge his GPS tracking bracelet and fleeing from police supervision. He was arrested again for failure to submit to mandatory alcohol testing. The 52 year old was expected to be released from the halfway house in August, thanks to a judge who gave him a third chance to meet the conditions of his probationary period. Prosecutors warned that a third chance for Eisenberg may not be a good idea, and cautioned that he could be a danger to the public. Eisenberg came to national attention when he strapped road flares to himself and walked into a Clinton campaign office in New Hampshire claiming he had a bomb. The standoff ended without injuries. WMUR-TV noted that authorities do not believe Eisenberg is armed. Members of the public are being encouraged to report any possible sightings to [...]

Florida GOP Gets Bored: Decides To Waste Taxpayer Money Stalking Beyonce & Jay Z

Do Florida Republican lawmakers have nothing better to do with our taxes? Republican Congress members, Ros-Lehtinen and Diaz-Balart, (shown below) asked for an investigation by the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control to look into why Jay Z and BeyoncĂ© are in Cuba. (compliments of Florida taxpayers). Written in the politicians request: “We would like to respectfully request, within all applicable rules and guidelines, information regarding the type of licence that BeyoncĂ© and Jay-Z received, for what purpose, and who approved such travel,” they wrote. “If these individuals were given people-to-people licenses, we would like to bring to your attention the Cuba Travel Advisory issued by OFAC on July 25, 2011 which states, ‘OFAC only licenses People-to-People Groups that certify that all participants will have a full-time schedule of educational exchange activities that will result in meaningful interaction between the travelers and individuals in Cuba.’” What? Are the Congress members ‘concerned’ –or bored? They’ve been reading, ‘How to get noticed by the GOP – 101′ and it’s just not working. Maybe this will do it. According to U.S. law, in order or Americans to visit Cuba, they must obtain a specific license. Citizens are not allowed to visit the country [...]

What Congress Does Best-Nothing

Despite widespread fears that dramatic budget changes would wreck an already fragile recovery, Congress unsurprisingly decided not to stray from their recent modus operandi and do what they do best– which became exponentially more prevalent since the current substandard Supreme Court decided to let corporate billions subvert the democratic process via the inexplicable ruling in Citizen’s United–nothing. Marginal income tax rates on top earners went up at the first of this year, and—more importantly—a reduction in the payroll tax rate adopted for stimulative purposes was allowed to expire. Other automatic cuts, the inexorable Sequestor, were delayed by a few months, but they too were allowed to take effect in March. How to Dismantle a Superpower Ever since the 2010 wave of poorly-qualified freshmen Congresspersons brought ineptitude to a new high in American politics, America’s bickering Republicans and Democrats have mostly resolved their fiscal differences by postponing them. That approach came to a head at the end of last year, when a horde of tax increases and spending cuts were allowed to take effect. The world has since watched and waited – admittedly perplexed – as January and February came and went without a collapse in economic activity. Employers continued to [...]

Watch: Powerful 60 Minutes Interview With Newtown Families

As parents of the children tragically slain at Sandy Hook Elementary School prepared to lobby Congress for gun violence prevention measures on Monday, CBS News’ 60 Minutes aired a powerful interview with seven of the families Sunday night, all members of the group Sandy Hook Promise. Many of the parents spoke wrenchingly of the moments leading up to the discovery of their children’s fates, and discussed what they would like to see happen on Capitol Hill. While background checks seem to have the most public support, it was magazine sizes that many of the Newtown parents saw as most important. The parents of Sandy Hook children Dylan Hockley, Ana Marquez-Greene, Benjamin Wheeler, Daniel Barden, and Jesse Lewis, as well as the mother of slain teacher Lauren Rousseau and the husband of school psychologist Mary Sherlach, began by introducing interviewer Scott Pelley to their lost loved ones. Jimmy Greene told Pelley that it was an honor to have known his six year-old, Ana, and that he cries every day. Ben Wheeler’s mom, Francine, revealed that her other son, Nate, “was hiding when he heard Ben and his classmates and educators get shot.” Mark Barden said, of his late son, Daniel, “He [...]

Boehner Rejects Obama Cuts-Revenue Proposal

House Speaker John Boehner immediately dismissed President Barack Obama’s package of significant new entitlement cuts tied to new tax revenues, calling them “no way to lead and move the country forward.” The White House had portrayed the proposal, part of the budget it will release next week, as a compromise with Congressional Republicans that could have put them on track for another run at a grand bargain. But Boehner said he will not consider new revenues as part of the deal, arguing that “modest” entitlement savings should not “be held hostage for more tax hikes.” The budget proposal sets Obama up for major fights on his right and left. Republicans will not accept any new tax revenues and liberal Democrats have already signaled they will resist any cuts to Social Security and other entitlement programs that Obama is proposing. Victory For Womens’ Rights: Federal Judge Orders Plan B Ban Lifted, Allowing For Teenage Girls To Receive Contraception Regardless of Age

Consider this a win for women’s health advocates: U.S. District Judge Edward Korman has ruled that the U.S. government must make the “morning-after” pill available over the counter and available to all ages. Responding to suit brought to the Brooklyn court by reproductive rights groups, “which had sought to remove age and other restrictions on emergency contraception,” Reuters reports, the judge struck down a law Friday morning requiring girls 16 and under to obtain a prescription before obtaining the pill. Korman’s decision “counteracts an unprecedented move by the Obama administration’s Health and Human Services secretary who in 2011 overruled a recommendation by the Food and Drug Administration to make the pill available for all ages without a prescription,” reports The New York Times’s Pam Belluck. Korman ordered the FDA to lift restrictions on the pill within 30 days. “Women all over the country will no longer face arbitrary delays and barriers just to get emergency contraception,” Nancy Northup, president of the Center for Reproductive Rights, is quoted as saying the Reuters report. U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius was a major — and majorly controversial — part of that overruling in December of 2011, upsetting women’s heath advocates [...]

(Audio) Rep. Louie Gohmert: We can’t restrict high-capacity magazines because gay marriage leads to bestiality

Here’s what Gohmert had to say about his opposition to gun control (emphasis mine, mental acrobatics Gohmert’s): In fact, I had this discussion with some wonderful, caring Democrats earlier this week on the issue of, well, they said “surely you could agree to limit the number of rounds in a magazine, couldn’t you? How would that be problematic?” And I pointed out, well, once you make it ten, then why would you draw the line at ten? What’s wrong with nine? Or eleven? And the problem is once you draw that limit ; it’s kind of like marriage when you say it’s not a man and a woman any more, then why not have three men and one woman, or four women and one man, or why not somebody has a love for an animal? There is no clear place to draw the line once you eliminate the traditional marriage and it’s the same once you start putting limits on what guns can be used, then it’s just really easy to have laws that make them all illegal. Listen for yourself this wacko speak.

Georgia Town Prepares For Federal Government Invasion, Makes Gun Ownership Mandatory (VIDEO)

Georgia Town Prepares For Federal Government Invasion, Makes Gun Ownership Mandatory Conservatives think the government should have no authority in gun control, right? Or do they support government interference in gun ownership if it goes in an unexpected direction…a direction that pleases them? Does that make it different? Can your government make it MANDATORY for you to own a gun? Indeed it can. And apparently a town full of conservatives in Georgia is totally OK with government interference…in this case. Nelson, Georgia passed a law on Monday that will require every adult resident in the town to own firearms and ammunition to “provide for the emergency management of the city” and to “provide for and protect the safety, security and general welfare of the city and its inhabitants.” (Family Protection Ordinance) Nelson boasts 1,300 residents and is approximately 50 miles north of Atlanta. A quiet community (don’t they all say that…until?), Nelson residents are surprised by the attention that their controversial ordinance is receiving. Really? Ben Carson Likens Marriage Equality To Pedophilia And Bestiality (VIDEO)

Dr. Ben Carson, the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, went on the Sean Hannity Show and compared advocating marriage equality to advocating pedophilia and bestiality: My thoughts are that marriage is between a man and a woman. Eleven children escaped Newtown classroom while Adam Lanza was reloading

“We learned, the way that no other parents should learn, that the most dangerous, dangerous part of an assault weapon is the magazine,” Nicole Hockley, whose son Dylan, 6, was killed Dec. 14, said at a press conference with other parents at the Capitol Monday morning. “The horrible, brutal truth is that 154 bullets were fired in four minutes, killing our children, our daughters, our wives. The shooter carried 10, 30-round large-capacity magazines,” Hockley said. “We have learned that in the time it took him to reload in one of the classrooms, 11 children were able to escape. We ask ourselves every day — every minute — if those magazines had held 10 rounds, forcing the shooter to reload at least six more times, would our children be alive today?” courant
