Daughter Of Newtown Victim Confronts Sen. Ayotte At Town Hall Over Gun Vote, Storms Out After Hearing Answer
The gun control debate has only gotten more heated in the wake of the Senate’s rejection of any proposed measures last week. One Republican already feeling the heat for her no vote is New Hampshire senator Kelly Ayotte, who was confronted by the daughter of a Newtown victim during a town hall event earlier today. Erica Lafferty directly asked Ayotte in a public forum why she prioritized the concerns of gun store owners over people like her mother who were gunned down at Sandy Hook. Lafferty brought up how Ayotte had voiced her concerns about an undue burden the Senate legislation would have on gun store owners, and asked the senator-point blank why “the burden of my mother being gunned down in the hall of her elementary school isn’t as important as that.” Ayotte sympathized with Lafferty’s desire to stop massacres like Newtown from happening again, but said that the Senate bill addressed background checks, which Ayotte pointed out was not an issue in Newtown, but did not to her satisfaction adequately address mental health treatment.
